Opal Capital of the World
The name comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means 'white man's hole'.
The hinterland (the Breakaways and Moon Plain) has featured as backdrops in films as ‘Mad Max, Beyond Thunderdome’, ‘Red Planet’, and ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’.
